Substack looks great, particularly with the new Notes feature/Twitter clone. But it falls short for me in a couple of ways.
- It’s yet to see whether Notes will actually be really boring. It has to tickle the neurons in all sorts of ways to be a successful social platform.
- I may also want to subscribe to someone’s Notes but not their newsletter
- It retains Twitter’s issues of being a global town square.
- I like to write in Notion, and for what I write to be published straight away. Substack needs me to do an awkward copy/paste.
- I don’t want to write every month. I want to publish when I want to, and get paid when that happens. Substack is monthly or yearly only.
- Substack doesn’t have beehiiv’s referral rewards program.
A combo of Notion + Super + my own Stripe integration+ Beehiiv (though I’ll have to copy/paste in here) is probably better than Substack.
Or there are some new Notion → Email newsletter options.

Other good writers have their own platforms too. Stratechery & Every. Note they have both expanded from one to many writers.
